Perhaps the most screen accurate version of the character was the "Human Alliance" version but that is hard to find at a cheap price nowadays. This led to many versions of the character being made in toy form including a Deluxe Class figure, a Target exclusive figure and a "Legends" (aka Legion) Class figure. One of these was Jazz (aka "Autobot Jazz" for trademark reasons). The first Transformers live action movie focused on using Autobots with names that long time fans would recognize. Part of the idea was also to fill in gaps in previous lines by making characters who had not appeared in the line previously. The series boasted toys that were made in rough scale with each other using the CAD files from Paramount Pictures as the basis for the design. In 2018 Hasbro launched the "Studio Series", a "Generations"-esque line of figured focused on the live action movies. The live action movie series was now ten years old meaning an entire generation of fans had grown up in an era where they had a live action Transformers theatrical film every other year to watch. He bravely executes his duty as first lieutenant of Optimus Prime when Decepticons converge on the city to secure a hard-won Autobot victory.Ģ017 was a milestone in Transformers history. In the climactic Mission City Battle scene from Transformers Movie 1, Autobot Jazz brings every unit of power in his frame to protect the human and Autobot forces at his back. Remove the backdrop included in pack to showcase Autobot Jazz in the Mission City Battle scene. The figure converts between robot and vehicle modes in 19 steps and comes with a high-impact weapon accessory inspired by the movie. Finally, I would really love to be able to do this all cost-free, as I have already purchased the Lion, and dont feel like buying a disc for it again. Unlike previous versions of Mac OS X, Lion (OS X 10.7) doesn’t ship on a bootable discit’s available only as an installer app downloadable from the Mac App Store, and that installer. And no, I don't have access to ANY Macs to format the SSD. IMPORTANT: No, I don't have ANY install discs, the only one I had, for Snow Leopard, is gone. If there is some way to format an SSD so that it will work with a MacBook Pro, that would be great.on a PC I have no idea how to format my SSD, let alone without a Mac. I bought Lion, and I'm hoping that there is a way to download this and put it on a USB, then boot my computer from it. So, I was wondering if there was any possible way to make a bootable USB or disk without having acsess to a Mac, or having to buy a disc. No idea where it went, I just don't have it. Now, most people can just put in their install disk and voila! But, I, sadly, do not have my install disk. Luckily, I had started backup up a month ago, and all my data is safe on my external hard drive, but this is only a time machine backup. After I got over the initial shock, I googled "hard drive replacement" after searching for a while, I noticed most sites just showed how to UPGRADE your hard drive, cloning it and all. At the time that Apple published that it had launched almost by surprise the OS X Mountain Lion, OSX Lion users who had a lot of problems with that. It has worked minutes ago, then my brother gets off, I open it up,and the hard drive has failed. Tried rebooting, grey screen, strange clicking noise like most people with hard drive failure. I instantly knew there was something wrong with my hard drive. The Sykpe signin page said "Disc I/O error" or something like that. It looked fine, untill I took a second look and I heard a strange clicking noise coming from my computer. Hello, just yesterday I opened up my MBP 13" Mid-2010 running 10.7.(4/5) (Not sure which it is, but I think it is 10.7.5) and the first thing I saw was Skype tring to sign in. By the end of the decade, however, it was apparent that benzene was toxic to the human body and its use in consumer applications ended rapidly.īenzene is now universally recognized as a human carcinogen. It was found in shaving cream, and it was used as a solvent and metal cleaner. Starting in the 1920s, benzene was used for various consumer applications. Benzene is a product of crude oil and it is widely used for various industrial applications, most notably to make plastic. The presence of high levels of benzene in sunscreen caused immediate alarm because benzene is a toxic chemical that is well-known to cause cancer in humans. Back in May, Valisure release a public safety notice stating that lab testing of various spray-on sunscreen products found that these products contained dangerously high levels of benzene. Valisure regularly performs random quality and safety testing on various consumer products and drugs. Valisure is an independent pharmacy with its own product safety testing laboratory. In this post, we will look at the details that led to the sunscreen recall and explain who might qualify for a sunscreen lawsuit. The product liability lawyers at Miller & Zois are currently looking for new sunscreen lawsuit cases from individuals who regularly used one of the spray-on sunscreen products recalled by J&J and were subsequently diagnosed with leukemia or certain other types of cancer. Now sunscreen lawsuits are being filed across the country and may eventually get consolidated into a new “class-action” MDL. Earlier this year, Johnson & Johnson recalled several popular spray-on sunscreen products after testing found that the sunscreen contained benzene, a dangerous carcinogen. In this album cover the word Vibrations is sliced up in such a way that it appears to actually be moving, vibrating. The rough type in negative works well with the brutish cut out shapes in this Anatomy of Murder poster. The Title Design of Saul and Elaine Bass. Saul Bass used hand-cut type in his mid-century design for film. It is both a tightly constructed courtroom drama and an engaging ensemble character study, and like James Stewart’s rumpled Michigan lawyer, it remains at once clever and down-to-earth. Bass trademark for this film, which centers on a murder trial, is a stylized image of a human body made up of separate parts, each looking as if it was cut. Discover more Saul Bass SAUL BASS: A LIFE IN FILM AND DESIGN. With more than 1,400 illustrations, many of them never published before. This is the first book to be published on one of the greatest American designers of the 20th Century, who was as famous for his work in film as for his corporate identity and graphic work. Saul Bass, (born May 8, 1920, Bronx, New York, U.S.died April 25, 1996, Los Angeles, California), American graphic designer and filmmaker who introduced a new art form with his imaginative film title sequences that conveyed the essence of a movie and prepared audiences for what they were about to see. But unlike some of his other notably controversial works, Anatomy of a Murder feels neither forced nor dated in its use of provocative subject matter. Jennifer Bass, Pat Kirkham, Martin Scorsese (Foreword) 4.59. True to Preminger’s appetite for provocation, Anatomy of a Murder is renowned for its use of some hitherto taboo words (ahem, panties) and its adoption of outré subjects such as rape and the insanity defense. The central image of the segmented corpse is so effective and simple that Spike Lee’s production company lifted it wholesale for the film, Clockers, until Bass threatened them with a lawsuit. Echoing the deliberate manner in which the film dissects the circumstances of a murder case, the credits also provide some witty juxtapositions of titles and images: James Stewart naturally gets the head Lee Remmick a leg Duke an arm and Preminger’s credit comes once a disembodied hand seems to cover the lens. Literalizing the film’s title, the credit sequence presents different cut-out (-off?) human limbs, which are in turn diced up into abstract decorative shapes. His title sequences for films such as Otto Premingers The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) and Anatomy of a Murder (1959), Alfred Hitchcocks Vertigo (1958). The books coverage is hardly comprehensive when this kind of design commission looks into every visual corner of a company. In this book they get six and five.Chapter six looks at the corporate work of Saul Bass and he worked for a lot of companies. The titles for the film are among Bass’ most recognizable and, along with Duke Ellington’s score, lend the film its particular blend of sophistication and loose, improvisatory charm. Anatomy of a murder has thirty-two thumbnails, North by northwest has twenty-four. Bass’ designs for Anatomy of a Murder were devised long before cameras began to roll, making clear the value that Preminger placed on Bass’ work and its role in positioning and branding his films. He was known for saying, "I just want to make beautiful things, even if nobody cares." Well, we certaintly do: here, we spotlight some of his seminal works from the 1950s capturing the visually stunning intersection of cinema and design.By 1959, Saul Bass had become an integral part of Preminger’s production team and his title designs an important element of the pitching and marketing of the director’s films. Anatomy of a Murder (1959) The opening sequence for Otto Preminger’s crime drama, Anatomy of a Murder, suggests tension by means of paper cutout shapes of body parts. What earned Bass his acclaim, though, was his spirited way of distilling an entire story into one, singular image. The design legends iconic film title sequence recently re-released by Criterion. Album cover for Duke Ellington's music from the motion picture Anatomy of a Murder. From a New York, Bauhaus-influenced education to working alongside the ranks of Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Martin Scorsese, Bass boasts a 40-year oeuvre that contains films spanning from Saint Joan to The Shining. The man who launched a million minimalist movie posters (try not to hold that against him), graphic designer Saul Bass may. Saul Bass, Duke Ellington, Columbia Records. He was a filmmaker, motion picture title sequence designer, and iconic logo creator-of Girl Scouts and Kleenex logo fame-yet his midcentury film poster designs would define his legacy. Striking graphics, striking color contrast, and minimalism challenged everything we knew about movie marketing, making the Vertigo poster a pivotal moment in graphic design. It might be the most memorable film poster of all time. Sodium is an essential nutrient and is needed by the body in relatively small amounts(provided that substantial sweating does not occur) to maintain a balance of body fluids and keep muscles and nerves running smoothly. In addition, blood pressure generally rises as you get older, so limiting your sodium intake becomes even more important each year. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can raise the risk of heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney disease, and blindness. Hypertension makes the heart work too hard, and the high force of the blood flow can harm arteries and organs (such as the heart, kidneys, brain, and eyes). High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is a condition in which blood pressure remains elevated over time. Sodium attracts water, and a high-sodium diet draws water into the bloodstream, which can increase the volume of blood and subsequently your blood pressure. No salt is added during processing – but these products may not be salt/sodium-free unless stated Also, some foods that you may eat several times a day (such as breads) can add up to a lot of sodium over the course of a day, even though an individual serving may not be high in sodium.Īt least 25% less sodium than the regular productĪt least 50% less sodium than the regular product For example, while some foods that are high in sodium (like pickles and soy sauce) taste salty, there are also many foods (like cereals and pastries) that contain sodium but don’t taste salty. Surprisingly, some foods that don’t taste salty can still be high in sodium, which is why using taste alone is not an accurate way to judge a food’s sodium content. Some common food additives-like monosodium glutamate (MSG), sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sodium nitrite, and sodium benzoate-also contain sodium and contribute (in lesser amounts) to the total amount of “sodium” listed on the Nutrition Facts label. Sodium as a Food IngredientĪs a food ingredient, sodium has multiple uses, such as for curing meat, baking, thickening, retaining moisture, enhancing flavor (including the flavor of other ingredients), and as a preservative. Sodium is a mineral, and one of the chemical elements found in salt. Table salt (also known by its chemical name, sodium chloride) is a crystal-like compound that is abundant in nature. The words “table salt” and “sodium” are often used interchangeably, but they do not mean the same thing. So, use the Nutrition Facts label to compare products, and don’t forget to check the serving size in order to make an accurate comparison. chips, crackers, popcorn)īut remember, the sodium content can vary significantly between similar types of foods. Check the serving size and the number of servings you eat or drink to determine how much sodium you are consuming.Īccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40% of the sodium consumed by Americans comes from the following foods: The nutrition information listed on the Nutrition Facts label is usually based on one serving of the food. Use %DV to determine if a serving of the food is high or low in sodium and to compare and choose foods to get less than 100% DV of sodium each day.Īs a general guide: 5% DV or less of sodium per serving is considered low, and 20% DV or more of sodium per serving is considered high. The %DV is the percentage of the Daily Value for each nutrient in a serving of the food and shows how much of a nutrient contributes to a total daily diet. The Daily Value for sodium is less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day. The Daily Values are reference amounts of nutrients to consume or not to exceed each day. Use the Nutrition Facts label as your tool to make informed decisions! Even though sodium may already be in many packaged foods when you purchase them, you can lower your daily sodium intake by using the Nutrition Facts label. Food and Drug Administration is working with the food industry to make reasonable reductions in sodium across a wide variety of foods. The food supply contains too much sodium and Americans who want to consume less sodium can have a difficult time doing so. Diets higher in sodium are associated with an increased risk of developing high blood pressure, which is a major cause of stroke and heart disease.ĭespite what many people think, most dietary sodium (over 70%) comes from eating packaged and prepared foods-not from table salt added to food when cooking or eating. Your body needs a small amount of sodium to work properly, but too much sodium can be bad for your health. You’ve probably heard that most Americans eat too much sodium. For a would-be novelist struggling under my own debilitating anxiety of influence, no more valuable lesson existed. It didn’t matter that McCarthy’s literary models were obvious, because he wrote as well as they did and occasionally better. But although I registered the novel’s considerable stylistic debts both to Hemingway and Faulkner - not to mention “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” - I was so intoxicated by its music that the point seemed academic. Part of what makes it so memorable, of course, is its odd, self-consciously archaic cadence - the oft-cited ‘biblical’ loftiness of McCarthy’s prose, which may be one reason few writers of my generation care to cite him as an influence. That line has lost none of its mystery, its austerity, its elegant foreboding. What neither of us imagined was that the glossy trade paperback with its attractively minimalist black-and-white cover would act as the catalyst for my entire professional life. I’d recently lost both my job and my apartment, and a friend thought a book about cowboys might distract me from my woes. When McCarthy’s sixth novel swept into my life, I was 24 years old and living in a tent I’d pitched in the basement of a warehouse under the Manhattan Bridge. I might never have finished a book if not for “ All the Pretty Horses” - and I don’t mean this in some vague or sentimental sense. The omission wasn’t due to any lack of impact on my writing, that’s for certain. Le Guin - even, just a few weeks ago, whoever ghost-wrote David Lee Roth’s memoir, “Crazy From the Heat.” But one name I’ve conspicuously avoided all these years has been that of McCarthy, who died last week at 89. Burroughs, Amos Tutuola, Lydia Davis, Toni Morrison, John Berger, Ursula K. In the two decades since my first book was published, I’ve fielded the boilerplate question about my influences no end of times, name-checking an almost absurdly ragtag crew: Shirley Hazzard, Denis Johnson, William S. In spite of the enormity of his shadow, however, I’ve never before written about the author of so many novels I’ve studied and admired. But virtually all of us, whatever our position or attitude, existed in its shade. Some of the novelists of my generation found the mountain beautiful others found it oppressive. For the entirety of my writing life, Cormac McCarthy has been a mountain. Maddie and Percy forge a bond after a disastrous date that results in both experiencing harrowing bodily harm while in the buff, and something like a friendship blossoms between these two oddballs, who are odd in different ways. Maddie needs a car, and she’s willing to romance a (legal) teenager, so off she roller skates for what she hopes will be a quick and easy venture into sex work.īut of course, it’s never about the destination but the friends we make along the way, and “No Hard Feelings” would never deny us that journey. Her car’s been just repossessed, towed by her ex Gary (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and with unpaid property tax bills looming, she needs wheels.Įnter the weirdest Craigslist ad of all time: A pair of wealthy helicopter parents ( Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti) would like to “arrange” for a young woman to date their sheltered, nerdy son, Percy ( Andrew Barth Feldman) in exchange for a Buick. There simply aren’t enough female dirtbags in cinema, so Lawrence’s Maddie Barker - Uber driver, surly bartender and pissed-off Montauk townie - is a refreshing character. It’s a “Superbad”-style story with the sensitivity and class consciousness of John Hughes, a delightfully raunchy streak, and Lawrence going for broke in a bold and bawdy performance as a rowdy Long Island surfer girl doing her best Mae West. Her follow-up swings in the opposite direction, kicking up her heels in a good old-fashioned sex comedy, “No Hard Feelings,” which she also produced.ĭirected by Gene Stupnitsky ( “Good Boys”), “No Hard Feelings” is a direct descendant of ‘80s teen coming-of-age comedies but evolved for a new generation. Last year, Lawrence produced and starred in the gritty indie film “Causeway,” as a veteran recovering from a traumatic brain injury, for a first-time female director, Lila Neugebauer. It was a smart move, because Lawrence is back now, and it’s a whole new ball game. So she fired her agents and took a break to get married and have a baby. But not all of those films were good, and Lawrence didn’t seem to be having all that much fun. A VHS VCR cannot read the video information correctly, even if the tape could fit into a VCR.In 2018, Jennifer Lawrence was 28 and one of the biggest movie stars in the world: an Academy Award-winning actor, a veteran of the “Hunger Games” franchise, alternating between prestige projects and giant action movies. 8mm/Hi8/miniDV video is of higher resolution than VHS and is recorded in a wider bandwidth, that is different from VHS. Due to how VHS VCRs record and read audio, they are not equipped to read the AFM ( Audio Frequency Modulation - similar to audio for FM radio) audio recorded on an 8mm or Hi8 tape. The audio in the VHS format is recorded and played back by either the tape moving across a stationary head, away from the video heads, or, in the case of HiFi Stereo VHS VCRs, by a process called Depth Multiplexing, in which separate heads on the rotating VCR head drum record the audio under the video recording layer, instead of on the same layer as the video signal, as 8mm and HI8 do. This audio recording is done via the same heads that do the video recording. 8mm/Hi8 audio is recorded in AFM HiFi mode, while the audio on a miniDV tape is recorded at either a 12-bit or 16-bit digital format.

He’d become so lost in the process of making the best carving he could, but his bishop’s reaction woke him up. (Jonathan Pageau)įinally, when he felt he’d done his best, he gave the pendant to his bishop after the liturgy. Panagia carving, 2012, by Jonathan Pageau. It was wonderful.” His mentor’s feedback helped him improve. Pageau laughed when he said, “He was ruthless with me. He’d never made a miniature before, so he contacted a Serbian carver who guided him through the process, which took several days. When his bishop saw him carving, he asked Pageau to make him a panagia, the pendant featuring the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child that Eastern Orthodox bishops wear when giving Divine Liturgy. Pageau first started carving in his spare time because it was something he loved doing. Pageau took a university-level course in Eastern Orthodox theology with iconography expert Father Stephen Bigham, who mentored him in the language of iconography. Boxwood, and leather, with basma (metalwork) by Andrew Gould. He found that Eastern Orthodoxy had a well-developed theological explanation of why icons existed, and he was now making objects for a sacred purpose: to be used in the church or in private devotion. It wasn’t just arbitrary images,” he said. “This type of art was completely integrated into the social fabric. Making art in the Eastern Orthodox tradition solved both his problems. Researching Eastern Orthodoxy, Pageau resonated with its theology and practices, particularly its more mystical approach to Christianity-so much so that he eventually converted to Eastern Orthodoxy. Anne and the Virgin,” 2014, by Jonathan Pageau. Then he found that in Eastern Orthodoxy, the tradition had been preserved and developed. Pageau became disappointed that this type of art no longer existed. And he noticed how the artists created patterns of meaning that he likens to a sacred algebra, where they took elements from one image and then transposed them in another. “I really fell in love with the language I thought it was amazing.” He could see the Bible stories in the art. She laughed, and told him that was not quite true, for she felt sure he would. One day he took all his art and threw it away, saying to his wife that he’d never make art again. All he wanted to create was something real and tangible but, in the postmodern art world, that was impossible. Secondly, he found postmodern art to be cynical and ironic. First, he grew up Protestant and image-making was taboo. After graduating from art school, he began creating modern art but found it unfulfilling. Growing up, he became interested in visual art. Pageau believes that iconography could be called the traditional art of the Christian church.ĭuring the Renaissance, the Western church slowly moved away from that transcendent medieval visual language and began making realistic art full of gestures and emotions. Primarily, he carves icons for liturgical purposes and private devotion.īut he’s also created a thriving online community where he teaches iconography, restores the symbolic worldview, and talks with thinkers such as Jordan Peterson who, Pageau says, are trying to “restore a sense of meaning and to help heal the deep nihilism that is infusing our culture right now.” “St. Pageau is doing his utmost to spread the word that symbols are alive, well, and all around us. Just as icons guide Christians in their spiritual life, so secular symbols throughout our traditional culture-as in our songs, stories, and images-can guide us, giving us hope and purpose each and every day. Pageau sees symbolism as an antidote to the nihilism that pervades our world. His brilliant icon carvings hark back to a bygone world that seems relevant only to Christians, yet the icon represents the pinnacle of a symbolic world we’re all immersed in.
